Rhode Island has a centralized state court system, but several courts handle cases involving Providence residents.

Superior Court is the primary court of general jurisdiction. It handles:

  • Felony criminal cases
  • Civil lawsuits over $10,000
  • Equity and land dispute cases

District Court operates differently. This court has jurisdiction over:

  • Misdemeanors (minor criminal offenses)
  • Civil cases up to $10,000
  • Small claims up to $2,500
  • Traffic violations
  • Administrative appeals

The Sixth Division of the District Court serves Providence.

Family Court handles divorces, child custody, child support, adoptions, domestic violence cases, and juvenile matters. It is a separate court with specialized jurisdiction.

Probate Court in Providence operates at the municipal level. The court handles wills, estate administration, and guardianship appointments. You need to contact the municipal probate court at Providence City Hall.

Federal cases — bankruptcy, federal criminal charges, constitutional issues — are handled by the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island, also located in Providence.

Providence Court Calendar & Upcoming Hearings

To find out which cases are scheduled for today, tomorrow, or this week, use the "Calendars and Public Access to Court Hearings" section on the main Rhode Island court system website. They publish schedules for Superior Court, District Court, and Family Court.

Step-by-step search procedure:

  1. Go to the courts.ri.gov website and select the desired court.
  2. Find the "Calendar" or "Daily Calendar" section for the relevant division.
  3. Select a date — the system will show a list of cases scheduled for hearing.

Calendars are usually updated daily. If you need a specific case, searching by number or party name through the public case information portal will show scheduled events in the docket sheet. For federal cases, the hearing schedule is available through the PACER system on the U.S. District Court website.

How to Get a Copy of a Providence Court Document

There are two types of copies: uncertified and certified. A certified copy has the court seal and clerk's signature — it is needed for official purposes, such as filing with another court or government agency.

Online. Through the Rhode Island Judiciary public portal, you can view the docket sheet and some documents. However, downloading a certified copy online is usually not possible — you need to contact the clerk's office for this.

In person. Contact the clerk's office of the relevant court. For Superior Court in Providence:

For District Court (6th Division):

  • The full name of the party in the case
  • The case number (if known)
  • The type of document needed
  • Whether a certified copy is needed
  • Payment in the form of a money order or check payable to the appropriate court

Some records have restricted access — juvenile cases, sealed criminal cases, certain family cases. The clerk will inform you if the requested document is available.

For municipal public records of the city of Providence (not court records), you can submit a request through the APRA procedure in accordance with the Rhode Island Access to Public Records Act (R.I. Gen. Laws § 38-2).
